ISO 14001

What is ISO 14001 Standard?

The intent of an ISO 14001 environmental management system (EMS) is to develop a systematic management approach to the environmental concerns of the organization. This involves setting up an environmental policy, addressing the environmental concerns (Aspects and Impacts) and defining what will be done to control them (Objectives and Targets).

Organizations must establish organizational structure, personnel responsibilities, competency and training, control and procedural documents, operational controls and emergency preparedness to accomplish the objectives and targets set.

Principles of ISO 14001

The standard is based on the Plan-Do-Check-Act methodology with five key phases:

Establish Objectives

Review products and processes to determine environmental impact and establish environmental objectives and targets.

Implementation

Identify resources and people required for implementation with proper documentation and communication.

Monitoring

Monitor and measure system effectiveness to ensure environmental objectives are met according to legal requirements.

Corrective Action

Conduct management review and make improvements to ensure objectives are met.

Strategic Review

Review and develop strategic approach to environmental issues with structural and organizational changes.
